Helen (Keira Knightley) may still be balancing her dangerous double life, but a new conspiracy threatens to undermine everything she’s worked for.

In the new trailer for Black Doves Season 2, which you can watch above, the spy mom continues to divulge government secrets to the covert organization she serves: the Black Doves. And with her husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan), preparing to become prime minister, Helen must walk a line more treacherous than ever.

A man, woman, two children, and a police officer stand outside a black door marked "10" amid a crowd, suggesting an official or political event in an urban setting.

“She’s literally the spy at the heart of government, so she’s kind of reached the pinnacle of where she can get to,” writer, creator, and executive producer Joe Barton tells Tudum. “But at the same time as that happens, her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), goes missing. So Helen’s in this very precarious situation, suddenly, and without her professional ally.”

Meanwhile, Sam (Ben Whishaw), once a high-end triggerman, is now reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits. “He’s at a low point because he’s in some legal trouble and is in a kind of Faustian pact with this mysterious man who gets him out of prison,” explains Barton.

Two people sit closely at a table indoors, having a serious conversation. Both wear jackets and appear focused on each other, with a blurred background suggesting a casual or café setting.

Though they’re on different paths, best friends Helen and Sam still find their way back to each other for another misadventure when Season 2 premieres Nov. 5. The two are reunited when a ruthless plot involving the Black Doves ensnares Reed (Lancashire). As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponized, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost them everything.

The road that led Helen and Sam here is paved with blood at the end of Season 1. After they survive a violent showdown on Christmas, Helen settles back into a semblance of normalcy with Wallace despite his suspicions that she’s lying about her past.

Two women with serious expressions cautiously descend a staircase in a warmly lit, wallpapered hallway. The woman in front holds a handgun, while the woman behind her wears a gray coat and aims a shotgun downward.
Older woman wearing glasses and a sweater with a leopard print stands casually in a warmly lit kitchen next to a refrigerator, gesturing with her hands while talking.
Man with long curly hair in a green jacket using a public phone inside a blue phone booth, looking alert or concerned, with a reflective, urban interior background.

“They accept each other for who they are a little bit more, flaws and all,” Barton told Tudum in 2024. “They do really care for each other.” But those lingering questions may be harder for the new prime minister to ignore in Season 2.

Meanwhile, Sam finds himself pulled back into the criminal world after protecting Helen by killing London crime boss Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman) and her son, Trent (Angus Cooper). That means leaving Michael (Omari Douglas), the love of Sam’s life, behind — but not before a bittersweet farewell.

As the trailer reveals, familiar faces will return to the fold in Season 2, including the delightfully cynical duo Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) and Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), as well as Lenny (Kathryn Hunter), who gave Sam his first job.

Woman in a dark suit standing in a well-lit hallway with green walls, wooden doors, framed art, and a green table lamp, conveying a serious or professional atmosphere.
Three women stand alert in a modern building hallway, holding toy-like guns and wearing serious expressions, suggesting a tense or adventurous scenario.

Helen and Sam’s mission for the truth also brings some dangerous new liaisons into the fold. Among them are Laila (Ambika Mod), an acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent; Mr. Conteh (Babou Ceesay), a Black Doves executive with suspicious motivations; Patrick (Sam Riley), an emissary from a mysterious organization who offers Sam a lifeline; and US defense envoy Cecile Mason (Neve Campbell).
