Bill Skarsgård Is a Charismatic Bad Boy in ‘Clark’

Oh, and he’s responsible for Stockholm syndrome, too.

Bill Skarsgård is a master of transformation: a horrifying clown in the It franchise, a loving father in The Devil All the Time and, in the upcoming Swedish drama series Clark, a party-boy bank robber who is responsible for Stockholm syndrome entering our lexicon.

Skarsgård plays Clark Olofsson, a career criminal whose good looks and charisma made Sweden fall in love with him back in the 1970s, despite his history of robbery, drug trafficking, jailbreaks and attempted murder. Olofsson’s participation in the 1973 Norrmalmstorg robbery helped coin the term Stockholm syndrome, a psychological condition in which hostages or kidnap victims develop feelings of trust or affection for their captors during their captivity. (In the high-octane trailer, we hear Clark quip, “It should be called the Clark Olofsson syndrome.”)

Clark is based on the truth and lies revealed in Olofsson’s autobiography. Its director, Jonas Åkerlund, has been the brains behind some of the most memorable pop music videos, working with artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera. So, yeah, it’s safe to say we trust the guy who directed “Telephone” to deliver Skarsgård at his most chaotic (and most Swedish).

Clark streams May 5 on Netflix, but until then, check out the trailer below.
