Family can be stressful, but this is a whole other level. In a new action comedy, Adam Devine faces an unimaginable dilemma — what do you do when your in-laws may also be The Out-Laws

“I don’t think you’ve ever seen an action version of Meet the Parents,” director Tyler Spindel (Father of the Year, The Wrong Missy) tells Tudum. Well, you’re about to.

What is The Out-Laws about?

Owen Browning (Adam Devine) is a straitlaced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker (Nina Dobrev). When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws (Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin), who just arrived in town, are the infamous outlaws.

“Click, click, there’s a gun to my head, and my bank is being held hostage, and my bank is being robbed,” Devine, who’s also a producer on the film, says. “And essentially, they say something that leads me to believe it’s my in-laws, and I have to figure out, ‘Is it [them]or is it not?’”

This is Devine’s third collaboration with Netflix, after Game Over, Man! and When We First Met. Here, he gets to share scenes with Pierce Brosnan himself, an intimidating father-in-law if there ever was one. “He’s a rogue, he’s an outsider. He’s a kind of lost soul. He and his wife are not who they say they are,” Brosnan says. “We come into town because our daughter’s getting married, and I do not take to this young man, in any shape or form. I find him to be not worthy of my daughter’s heart. And I give him a very hard time in the process of him trying to woo her."

Who is in the cast of The Out-Laws?

Alongside the central foursome, The Out-Laws formidable ensemble cast includes Michael Rooker, Poorna Jagannathan, Julie Hagerty, Richard Kind, Lil Rel Howery, Blake Anderson, Lauren Lapkus and Laci Mosley.

Dobrev and Devine are real-life friends who previously appeared together in 2015’s The Final Girls and in an episode of Devine’s Workaholics; their easy chemistry continued on The Out-Laws. “He was an incredible, generous actor in the scenes and a great partner. I couldn't speak more highly of him,” Dobrev says. “He's just such a great guy and maybe my favorite co-star that I've ever worked with.”

And of course, everyone was excited to spend some time with Brosnan. “I remember the first time I met him,” Spindel recalls. “He just looked into my eyes and shook my hand. And let me tell you, it was just the perfect handshake. He has a firm grip, but it’s not overpowering. He’s dangerous yet safe. His skin is soft, but it’s also rugged. He smells so good.”

Brosnan had similarly lovely things to say about his on-screen wife. “[It] was a real delight to be able to spend time with Ellen, who I just absolutely adore,” Brosnan says. “And just showing up for work every day and saying, ‘What’s going on? Are you going to do this scene? Are you going to do this? Is this how I’m going to do it?’”

But it’s not just Bond meets Barkin; everyone gets a moment to shine in the film. Keep an eye out for some scene-stealing moments from Hagerty and Kind, who play Owen’s parents. “I think Julie Hagerty is the funniest person in the world,” Barkin tells us. “Richard Kind, who is my friend, I can barely keep a straight face even saying, ‘Hello Richard.’ ”

Does Nina Dobrev really have all those tattoos?

Dobrev’s character Parker is covered in tattoos; Dobrev herself doesn’t have a single one — yet. “The edgy part of her, the nod to her family and her past is the fact that she had so many tattoos and that she was rebellious and creative and expressed herself in that way,” Dobrev tells us. “I told Tyler, if this movie hits number one, I'll get one of the tattoos that my character had. And so we'll see if that happens.

When is The Out-Laws’ release date?

The Out-Laws is streaming on Netflix now. At least one member of the cast will be watching — again. “I just sort of felt like an audience member,” Dobrev tells us. “I genuinely just had such a fun time watching it. I think it’s a really fun ride.”
