Anyone But You: Everything You Need to Know About the Rom-Com

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell star in the comedy from Will Gluck.

The 2023 rom-com Anyone But You made waves last year when the film cast two rising-star leads, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who then embarked on a steamy PR campaign. Upon its release, the film clawed its way up the box office, proving once and for all that hottie-filled rom-coms are alive and well

In the film, from Easy A director Will Gluck, Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) first lay eyes on each other during a meet-cute at a busy Boston coffee shop, which leads to a great date, which leads to disaster. Months later, when the sworn enemies are invited to a destination wedding, they reluctantly agree to be pretend-together to make his ex jealous and her parents to stop trying to force her back together with hers. Now Bea and Ben are about to get uncomfortably close — whether they like it or not.

What happens in Anyone But You?

When prospective lawyer Bea (Sweeney) meets Goldman Sachs guy Ben (Powell), she’s in a coffee shop pleading with the barista to use their restroom — with no luck, since she’s not a paying customer. Luckily, Ben swoops in to save her by buying her a beverage. The two share a sweet moment, and end up hanging out the rest of the day … and night. The next morning, after waking up in each other’s arms, Bea jets out of Ben’s apartment like it’s on fire. Moments later, Ben, confused and a bit hurt, talks smack about Bea to his best friend, Pete (GaTa), not knowing Bea’s just outside listening in. And that’s how Bea and Ben come to hate each other.

But fate has other plans. Pete’s sister Claudia (Shipp) is marrying Bea’s sister Halle (Robinson) at an intimate destination wedding in Sydney, and both Bea and Ben are invited. Everyone in attendance knows the pair loathe each other, but hijinks ensue: Bea’s parents, Leo (Mulroney) and Innie (Griffiths), invite Bea’s ex Jonathan (Barnet), hoping the pair will rekindle their long-term relationship — while Claudia’s family and Halle try to trick Bea and Ben into liking each other again. Bea and Ben catch on to everyone’s tricks and commit to the bit by pretending to be a couple. But — wuh oh — could this lead to them actually falling in love?

Is Anyone But You based on a book?

Yes. The script, from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series screenwriter Ilana Wolpert, is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing

“Ilana took such a cool, modern twist on Shakespeare, I felt like I was reading an early 2000s rom-com,” Sweeney told The New York Times. “I loved wanting to be kissed in the rain, wanting to fall in love once I finished reading the script, wanting to cry, laugh, feeling all the feels.”

Where does Anyone But You take place?

The rom-com takes place in Boston and Sydney.
