The race is on: Crew Girl, a brand-new series set in the competitive world of high school rowing, is making a splash on Netflix. Get a taste of the drama alongside Miku Martineau, Sam Braun, and Kyle Clark in the trailer above, then dive into the full season now.

From showrunner Vivian Lin, Crew Girl tells the story of Teagan Tao (Martineau), a gifted 16-year-old single sculler whose promising future is derailed by a family scandal. Forced to relocate to the East Coast with her mom, Ella (Jessica Paré), Teagan hopes to have a fresh start at the prestigious Easton Prep. But once there, she finds that she’s not just the outcast newcomer — she’s stuck on land. There’s no girls’ rowing team at Easton. Her only way back onto the water? Taking the helm as coxswain for Easton’s notoriously chaotic boys’ varsity crew.

“You can expect a lot of drama, a lot of abs, a lot of rowing,” Martineau said at Netflix’s End of Summer Bash event. “Adolescence is messy, but it’s beautiful, and we navigate friendships and romances and a lot of family dynamics. I think a lot of people — young viewers, people in their 30s, 40s — will enjoy it. It’s such a good coming-of-age story.”

Four young adults in athletic wear stand outdoors near a lake surrounded by greenery, with one woman smiling in the foreground and three men posing in the background, suggesting a team or training setting.

Teagan’s single-minded passion for crew helped guide Martineau as she crafted the character. “We meet Teagan at a time in her life where it is completely turned upside down. To get through what she’s going through requires a person with a lot of mental fortitude and resilience. Those qualities also make her relationships within the show so dynamic and make her a great rower and eventually a great leader,” says Martineau. “That’s what I love about her character and what was important to me in that crafting process.” New to crew? Martineau, Braun, and Clark have you covered on everything there is to know.

Now that all eight episodes of Crew Girl are streaming, keep reading for more details on this exciting new sports romance, and check out some behind-the-scenes photos that take you inside the posh world of Easton Prep.

What is Crew Girl about?

Thrown into a world of wealth and ruthless competition, Teagan has to convince an entire team to trust her leadership — and each other. It’s not always smooth sailing with her spandex-clad squad. “Crew is so intense and emotional and powerful and empowering,” says Martineau. “Those are all qualities that make a great story, especially a coming-of-age story that follows these young rowers.”

As she fights to reclaim her rowing dreams, manage the chaos of the crew, and navigate her family’s growing troubles, Teagan finds herself caught between two boys in her boat: the school’s golden boy, Josh Regis (Braun), and quiet but fiercely determined local Cam Dillinger (Clark), who refuses to be underestimated.

Josh and Cam bring out different sides of Teagan, and she’s attracted to both for distinct reasons. “Josh may come off a bit arrogantly, but there’s something attractive about a person with such confidence,” says Martineau. “They have a very fun and spicy dynamic.” Meanwhile, Cam is “the classic boy next door who’s so sweet and kind and gentle,” Martineau adds. “They’re both trying to gain a sense of belonging at Easton Prep, and trying to prove themselves to the team.”

So is Martineau Team Josh or Cam? “Team Teagan, girl power,” the actor says. “We all have those moments where we feel underestimated, especially as women in male-dominated environments. So I’m Team Teagan because she’s a pretty powerful young lady.”

Is there a Season 2 of Crew Girl?

Season 1 is now streaming, and there’s no news yet about a potential Season 2.

Braun and Clark, however, already have ideas for where the story could go next. “If we go to Season 2, I think we should go on summer break or something, get lost in the woods,” Braun spitballs. “It’d be really fun to do a summer bash and be on the lake boat and see what their life is [like] outside of rowing too.”

Clark would also like to see the series expand on the sport, adding, “We really want to step it up if we have more time.” And with Britney’s (Sage Linder) new girls team on the horizon, Teagan might get the chance to get back behind an oar. “It’s going to be interesting to watch,” Martineau teases. “She has such an attachment to the boys’ team, but she’s also in pursuit of her own rowing career.”

As for Teagan’s heart, Martineau says it’s anyone’s guess: “Who knows what can happen in Season 2? A love square — is that even possible?”
