True crime has held mass appeal for as long as people have been reporting on the crimes of their neighbors. There’s awareness — and common sense — to be gained from forcing ourselves to take in the nitty-gritty details. But in a fallible world, crimes can often go unsolved and unpunished. If you are looking for the fascination of a true crime story, but don’t want to be left wondering once the case goes cold, then these documentaries about solved mysteries are the perfect fit.

Find relief, the possibility of closure, and maybe even some gained respect for our public safety and legal justice systems as you stream and follow these solved true crime documentaries to their final resolutions.

What Jennifer Did

The Crime: On the night of Nov. 8, 2010, police in Ontario, Canada received a call from Jennifer Pan. Frantic, the young woman pleaded for help after armed intruders broke into her home, demanded money, and fled after shooting both her parents. Jennifer — the sole unharmed family member — told a fairly convincing story, but when her longtime boyfriend, Daniel Wong, entered the picture, a story of forbidden romance and intricate lies unfolded.

The Victims: Bich Ha Pan, Jennifer’s mother, was killed, and her father, Huei Hann Pan, went into a coma. Jennifer initially claimed to have been tied up by the perpetrators, but when her father woke up, he told a different story.

The Verdict: You’ll have to get to the end of this one to discover the truth about what happened that night, and the scheming that led up to it — but trust us, the guilty don’t go unpunished here.

American Murder: Gabby Petito

The Crime: The story riveted America in the summer of 2021 — Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old aspiring vlogger, went missing after falling out of contact with her family on a cross-country van journey with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. By now, millions have seen the bodycam footage of a distressed Petito crying to the police officer in Moab, Utah, who pulled the couple over after a 911 caller reported seeing Laundrie hit her.  A few weeks after the incident, Gabby’s parents report her missing, growing alarmed when Brian returned home to his parents with the van, but without Gabby.

The Victim: Gabby Petito, a bright and cheerful young woman with dreams of chronicling her adventures on YouTube.

The Verdict: The investigation led to definitive answers for Gabby’s family, providing a modicum of closure. Still, her parents continue to pursue more thorough justice.

The Menendez Brothers

The Crime: On the night of August 20, 1989, Lyle Menendez called 911 to report that he and his brother Erik had arrived home from the movies to find their parents brutally shot and killed in their Beverly Hills home. From there, the media latched on to every detail about the two wealthy young playboys, who spent big and embraced fame in the aftermath of tragedy, eventually becoming the prime suspects.

The Victims: José Menendez was a Cuban immigrant who amassed his fortune as a music and film executive. His wife, Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, met José in college and the two married soon after.

The Verdict: The Menendez murder case spanned multiple years and two separate trials, eventually resulting in life sentences for Lyle and Erik. However, this documentary gives the brothers the chance to speak for themselves and argue against their harsh sentences.

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal

The Crime: In early 2019, a boat piloted by the wealthy, intoxicated teenager Paul Murdaugh crashed on South Carolina’s Beaufort River, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old woman. Paul Murdaugh’s father, Alex Murdaugh, tried to use his considerable influence in the community to keep Paul from jail — until 2021, when Paul and his mother Maggie were found murdered at the family estate. During the investigation, a 2015 homicide cold case was reopened, Alex’s financial crimes and drug use were exposed, and he soon found himself in hot water.

The Victim: Mallory Beach was the well-loved young woman whose tragic death incited a further spiral of violence, including the brutal slayings of Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie.

The Verdict: This case has plenty of layers, revealing not only the dark corners of a tight-knit Southern community, but the measures one man took to avoid the consequences of his actions. The high-profile trial of Alex Murdaugh was lengthy — and this docuseries unfolds over two seasons — but ultimately led to a unanimous verdict.
